Our view of the service
Date of inspection, 21 July 2026. The inspection of this location was prompted due to the historic rating. Sandrock House Residential Care Home is a care home registered to provide personal care and accommodation for up to older people, including those living with dementia. At the time of the inspection, the service was supporting 33 people. The service consistently delivered exceptionally high-quality, person-centred care, placing people at the heart of everything it did. Staff knew people extremely well and used their understanding of individual histories, preferences, interests and aspirations to provide highly personalised support that reflected what mattered most to them.
People were treated with kindness, compassion and respect. There was a warm and welcoming atmosphere where people were encouraged to maintain their independence, make meaningful choices and remain in control of their daily lives. Relatives and professionals spoke highly of the caring culture and the positive impact staff had on people’s wellbeing.
The service promoted an exceptionally positive and inclusive culture. Staff went above and beyond to help people maintain relationships, pursue hobbies and participate in meaningful activities that enhanced their confidence, wellbeing and sense of purpose.
Leadership was a key strength. The provider and registered manager was highly visible, approachable and led by example, creating a culture where kindness, accountability and person-centred values were embedded throughout the service. Staff felt valued, supported and motivated to provide the highest standards of care.
Staff were highly skilled, knowledgeable and well supported through training and development opportunities. Care planning and risk management were robust, regularly reviewed and tailored to individual needs, ensuring people received responsive support that promoted positive outcomes and independence.
The service worked exceptionally well with healthcare professionals and community partners, ensuring people received coordinated, timely and effective care. Staff were proactive in monitoring health and wellbeing, responding promptly to concerns and supporting people to access appropriate healthcare services.
There were sufficient staff available to meet people's needs safely and promptly. A strong team ethos ensured people received consistent, responsive and compassionate support.
The environment was comfortable, welcoming and designed to promote independence, engagement and quality of life. Governance arrangements were highly effective, with strong oversight, regular audits and a commitment to continuous improvement. Feedback was actively sought and used to maintain and further develop the outstanding quality of care provided.
People experienced exceptionally personalised, compassionate and responsive care from a dedicated staff team committed to helping them achieve the best possible outcomes and live fulfilling lives.
People's experience of this service
People and their family members spoke extremely positively about the quality of care provided and had complete confidence in the service. One family member described the impact of the care as, “Tremendous,” explaining how their relative had struggled at home following a fall and deterioration in their mobility, but was now thriving within the service. They said, “We realised if people are on hand, it makes my relative feel safe. My relative is very happy now.”
Feedback consistently highlighted how the service promoted people's independence, wellbeing and quality of life. Family members told us, “This has given my relative a purpose and sense of independence,” and “My relative could have been isolated. Now they are keeping her mind active. It's been really positive.” Another relative said, “Given my relative their independence back they can say yes or no.”
Staff were repeatedly praised for their caring, compassionate and highly personalised approach. One family member said, “Staff are exceptional,” whilst another commented, “Genuinely very kind and caring. They have taken the time to get to know [my relative] and treat them kindly.” Relatives told us staff understood people as individuals, with one saying, “They have got to learn who my relative is and what they like, simple things such as how they like their cup of tea.”
People and families consistently told us they felt safe and reassured by the care provided. One relative explained, “My relative was diagnosed with dementia type symptoms and became scared at home. Now they feel very settled, we know they feel safe and are no longer scared.” Another said, “The beauty of it is there is always someone around. Never said they had to wait for care.”
Feedback about communication was overwhelmingly positive. Family members described being kept fully informed and involved in decisions about care. Comments included, “Communication was good. They always ring me and want to run things past us,” and “We are kept informed.” Another relative said, “If I have a question, I can ask. No question is a silly question.”
Relatives consistently told us staff were proactive in recognising and responding to changes in people's health needs. One family member said, “Eye infection, they had already spotted it and given her drops before we said anything.” Another told us, “Medical services engaged the district nurse and the right professionals. They got my relatives ulcers cleared up.”
People were supported to make choices and maintain control over their lives. One family member explained, “My relative makes choices,” while another said, “They help people make choices about what to wear.” Staff were attentive to people's preferences and routines, including food and drink choices. A relative told us, “The chef comes around in the morning and asks what do you fancy.”
People benefited from meaningful activities that reflected their interests and abilities. One family member said, “My relative is now doing the singing and dancing and a quiz they feel fully involved.” Another added, “Every activity revolves around what they find interesting.”
The management team were highly visible and approachable and had developed positive relationships with people and their families. One family member told us, “They made it run so smoothly and welcome, we already feel involved,” while another said, “Owners are ready to pop in every week to ask how they are.” All feedback demonstrated the service consistently exceeded expectations and delivered care that had a significant positive impact on people's lives.
