Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 5 March 2026. Hoyland Hall is a care home providing accommodation and support for up to 44 people. The service supported older and younger people, some people were living with dementia. Some people had a learning disability, but this was no longer their primary need. At the time of this assessment there were 44 people receiving care and support. We inspected the service due to the age of the rating and due to concerns raised regarding people’s pressure area care. The last inspection took place in March 2019; and was rated good. The service has deteriorated to requires improvement.

Risks associated with people’s care were not always managed safely; some care plans did not always provide sufficient information to support people safely. Accidents and incidents were not always robustly analysed to identify trends and patterns to mitigate future risks. We carried out a tour of the home and found people were not always protected from the risk and spread of infection. Some areas of the home required deep cleaning. The environment was not always safe. Some large items of furniture were not securely fitted to the wall, a portable heater was being used which was extremely hot, and some fire exits had items stored in them which would reduce space required during an evacuation. People were not always safeguarded from the risk of abuse. Some concerns identified had not been appropriately escalated. Evidence seen did not always demonstrate that people had received their medicines as prescribed.

Staff were kind and caring when they interacted with people, however, there were times when staff were task focused. Staff were not always deployed effectively which meant some areas were left without staff presence.

Management systems and processes were not always effective in identifying areas for improvement. During our inspection we identified concerns in relation to safe care and treatment, safeguarding, person-centred care and good governance. These issues had been previously identified by the management team.

Following our inspection the provider took appropriate actions to address the concerns. They sent us evidence that the issues identified had been addressed and measures put in place to prevent recurrence. However, systems and processes need to be monitored and embedded in to practice to ensure their effectiveness.

The provider was in breach of the legal regulation relating to safe care and treatment, safeguarding, person-centred care and good governance.
