The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. One person said, referring to the staff, “I have the very best of carers here.” We observed staff and people engaged in friendly conversations and appropriate banter. We saw a lot of smiles when staff and people were in each other’s company.

We saw a lot of smiles when staff and people were in each other’s company.

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. One relative commented, “They [staff] are always available, and they worked hard with [name of loved one] to get her to eat when she first came and now, she eats well. She likes the staff.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. People and relatives told us the manager and staff responded to people’s needs in a timely way. We observed the staff raising a health query and this being followed up by the nurse in a timely way. One person was waiting for a GP visit as they had raised a concern in the morning and staff had arranged a GP visit for the same day. The person told us, “They [staff] help whenever I need it.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff were very clear they felt supported by the provider. Comments such as “I love it here.” And “We have good supervisions and training.” “The owner will buy things we say we need, never a problem getting what is needed.”
