During a routine inspection

We visited St Andrew's as part of our planned schedule. We spoke with five people living at the home privately, three staff, the manager and two visiting professionals. During the visit three people's care was pathway tracked. This involves looking at people's individual plans of care and wherever possible speaking with the person and staff who care for them. This enables the Commission to better understand the experience of everyone living at the home.

Although only one inspector was present at this visit, throughout the report there will be reference to what 'we' found and what 'we' were told. This is because the report is written on behalf of the Care Quality Commission.

People living at the home told us that they had been consulted about their care plans and we saw evidence of their involvement recorded. People also told us that staff always treated them with respect. Staff were seen knocking on doors before entering, clearly showing they respected people's personal space.

One person told us about how they had visited the home before they had decided to move in.

People living at the home also told us that staff were well aware of their needs and how they liked them to be met. One person told us that the staff were 'very helpful and good'. Another person told us the staff are 'looking after me very well'. People told us that the food was very good and that there was always a choice on the menu or an alternative if they didn't like either of the choices. We heard people being asked what they wanted for lunch and supper the next day.

People told us that they would talk to the staff or the manager if they were unhappy about anything. One person told us that staff often sat and chatted with them and that they didn't have to wait too long for any help they needed. Another person told us that staff were 'always available to help' and 'very kind'. Someone else told us that 'nothing was too much trouble' for staff and that they were always willing to do 'extra things, like posting letters'.
