Equity in access

Regulations met

Staff had carried out a disability access audit and had an action plan to continually improve access for patients.

Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible. The practice had access to large print or alternative formats of information and a magnifying glass to support patients with impaired vision. The practice had a hearing induction loop to support patients with a hearing impairment. The practice was wheelchair accessible with step-free access and ground floor treatment rooms. Staff had access to language translation services.

Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care.

The practice supported more vulnerable members of society, for example, patients living with dementia or adults and children with a learning disability.

The practice displayed its opening hours and provided information on their website and entrance to the building.

The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.

The practice provided patients with information on how to access emergency dental treatment during normal opening hours and when the practice was closed. An out-of-hours message on the practice telephone system included an option for dental emergencies, which directed callers to the principal dentist. Arrangements were in place to divert calls to another dentist or the practice manager when the principal dentist was unavailable, ensuring patients could access urgent advice and support when required. Patients who had undergone more complex treatments, such as implant placement, were also provided with direct contact details should they require urgent assistance outside normal opening hours.

At the time of our inspection, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner.
