People spoke positively about the kind and caring nature of staff. A person told us they were very happy and that they were well respected by staff. A visiting health professional said, “Personally I think this is a really nice home where staff treat people well.” They went on to tell us about the fun, laughter, rapport and comradery they had observed between people and staff.

We saw lots of positive interactions between people and staff during our visits. Staff were respectful, caring and promoted people’s dignity.

Staff were alert to people’s needs and offered support that reflected their individual needs and preferences. Care plans were person-centred, and staff had a good understanding of people’s needs and how to meet them. We saw that people’s bedrooms were personalised to their own tastes.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The staff and management team promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to make decisions about their day-to-day life. Staff included relatives in making complex decisions where people could not do so themselves.

People took part in a range of activities and outings of their choice to promote their independence. This included, baking, swimming, visits to day centres, shopping and festive activities such as going to the BSL pantomimes. The provider supported people to enjoy holidays.

People were encouraged to be as independent as possible including with mealtime preparation. Sometimes this was changed into a fun event. For example, people took part in making pies for each other to eat and then gave a rating as to who made the best pie.

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Information for staff about how to avoid people becoming anxious or distressed was included in people’s care plans. We observed staff responding promptly to people’s needs and acted to minimise any discomfort, anxiety or distress.
