The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. Staff concentrated on improving people’s lives while protecting their right to live in safety, free from bullying, harassment, abuse, discrimination, avoidable harm and neglect. The provider shared concerns quickly and appropriately.

People were safe and happy using the service and they had no safety concerns when being supported by staff. One person told us, “I feel safe here. I’m happy here. [Staff member] makes me happy because she’s nice.” A relative of a person using the service said, “I have no concerns about [family member’s] safety. They (staff) are good with [family member] and know them and know how to look after them.”

Staff understood their duty to safeguard people and how and when to report safeguarding concerns to the relevant person or agency. A staff member told us, “I would inform the manager if there was a concern and make a record of what I’ve seen. Management should know what to do but I would go higher if needed.”

Managers told us there had been no safeguarding concerns raised by, and about, people in the last 12 months. They understood their responsibility to make timely referrals when needed and to work proactively with the relevant agencies to ensure people were safeguarded from further risk.

The staff understand [family member] very well and they have been there with them a long time…I have no concerns or worries.” The deputy manager said, “We have risk taking plans in place and have risk assessments to support these. We try and balance risks so people can be independent and not come to harm. We do a lot of health and safety training for staff and this gives them support to look after people in a safe way.”
