Our view of the service

Pinhoe View provides 36 acute beds across two wards for 18 men and 18 women who have enduring mental health problems. The wards are called Kenn Ward and Clyst Ward. Pinhoe View accepts referrals and admits people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and provide full medical, clinical and therapeutic packages including pharmacological interventions when required.

Pinhoe View was registered with the CQC in April 2021 to deliver the regulated activities: treatment of disease, disorder or injury; assessment of medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983; diagnostic and screening procedures. At the time of the inspection, the service had a controlled drugs accountable officer and a registered manager. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. Registered persons have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated Regulations about how the service is run.

We assessed both Kenn Ward and Clyst Ward at Pinhoe View on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 May 2026 to determine if the service had made improvements since a previous inspection on 29 and 30 November 2022. We found that the service had made improvements and had met the actions of the requirement notice.

Our inspection team comprised 3 mental health inspectors, and 1 expert by experience. Before the inspection visit, we reviewed information that we held about the provider, asked a range of other organisations for information and sought feedback from patients.

People's experience of this service

Feedback from Experts by Experience, carers and from patients and relatives was gathered during the inspection. One carer told us “overall, I believe my daughter’s care was very good and I believe they did their very best with [her]…I attended all her ward rounds and really felt listened to. The doctor was very good. We worked together to improve [her] sleep which was so important”.

We also heard “the liaison carer’s support was 10 out of 10. Information flow was very good” and “the ward was very clean and tidy”.

Another carer told us “staff were always polite. If I had one thing to say there is a large amount of [global majority] staff. Understanding their words is not always easy and they come across as abrupt sometimes”.

Relatives stated “the care received was very good and [the patient] is much improved. The rooms are a good size, the place is always clean and tidy and staff are very nice”, “I had no problems getting information from the unit and visiting was easy” and “the doctors and consultants listened to us both, changed medication when requested which was great. I have been very happy with the care”.
