Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 01 and 02 May 2025. Oaklands Care Home provides accommodation with nursing care for up to 31 people. Accommodation is arranged over two floors with stair and lift access. At the time of this inspection there were 25 people using the service. Our inspection was prompted by concerns received about the clinical safety of the home and how this was managed. This was a comprehensive inspection, and we reviewed all the quality statements.

The provider had processes in place to manage people’s medicines, however we identified a shortfall in medicines storage related to temperature monitoring and action taken where records demonstrated temperatures went above 25 degrees Celsius. We received assurances the provider had addressed our feedback. Checks for safety had been carried out for the premises and for any equipment being used. Fire risks were assessed and managed. Quality assurance processes were in place to monitor all aspects of the service, although they hadn’t identified the medicines storage issue we found. Action plans were in place and actions taken following audits were monitored. Managers investigated incidents thoroughly and lessons learned were shared with staff.

Risk assessments had been completed and regularly reviewed, and care plans informed staff how to keep people safe from harm. Staff had the right skills, qualifications and experience to meet the needs of people and staff knew how to support people safely. There were enough staff to meet the needs of people and staff knew how to support people safely. Staff followed safeguarding processes and systems were effective to manage any safeguarding concerns.

People had enough to eat and drink to stay healthy. Staff worked with all agencies involved in people’s care for the best outcomes. They monitored people’s health to support healthy living. The service was visibly clean, and we observed staff following infection prevention and control guidelines. Staff told us there was an open culture and they felt valued and respected. They spoke positively about the management team and told us they felt valued and listened to.
