Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust required improvement in July 2014.

The trust works hard to raise awareness of equality and diversity among staff, local people, and the wider community. They replaced lengthy equality reports with four eye-catching charts that highlight equality and diversity issues and how the trust performs for staff and patients.

Work has focused on:

  • addressing the most pressing inequalities, such as how staff can support transsexual patients to have the best possible experience
  • working with the voluntary sector to reach out to groups of people least likely to access hospital services and raise any concerns. These include Gypsies and travelling communities, asylum seekers and refugees, people with mental health needs and lesbian, gay and bisexual people

Using the support of Healthwatch, the voluntary sector and wider patient engagement groups, they try to make sure that the community they serve is represented in health care and their needs are met.

This work is supported by staff training and development and wider activity, such as involvement in activities to support the Leeds Pride festival.

The trust was rated as good in September 2016.
