Vision based monitoring systems

Vision based monitoring systems (VBMS) are a type of digital contactless patient monitoring technology.

These systems use an infrared camera to monitor people’s vital health signs. They can also record short clips to allow staff to look at the movement and presentation of the patient. Depending on the system, these clips can either be clear or blurred.

New technologies are being developed that use radar instead of an infrared camera. These systems display an image of a stick person or a dot, instead of offering a clear or blurred image of people. These are known as ‘Non-Vision Based Monitoring Systems’ (NVBMS).

VBMS should not be used for surveillance. This means that you must not use these technologies to continually monitor people to keep them safe from abuse, neglect, or other criminal activity.
