St Lukes Lodge rated Outstanding by Care Quality Commission
The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by St Lukes Lodge as ‘Outstanding’ overall following an inspection in April 2016.
Inspectors rated St Lukes Lodge, located in Mill Lane, Padworth in Reading ‘Outstanding’ for being effective and well-led, ‘Good’ for being safe, caring, and responsive to people’s needs.

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said:
“It is encouraging to know that there was an openness to learn and deliver an exceptional level of personalised care at St Lukes Lodge.
“Staff had the right skills and knowledge to meet individual needs and should feel proud of the work they do and for the positive impact they have on lives of people living in the service.
“Morale was excellent and managers were visible, approachable and responsive to suggestions made to improve the quality of service.”
“People should always be cared for by services that are safe, effective, caring, responsive to their needs, and well-led. I would encourage other providers to read this report, and the others we have published on services we have rated Outstanding, to see what they can learn.”
The report highlights a number of areas of Outstanding practice, including:
- Providing an exceptional, proactive and strong person-centred care that enables people with moderate to severe learning difficulties to develop and maintain self-caring skills.
- Encouraging people to remain independent, free to make decisions and supporting their involvement in personal and meaningful activities.
- Responding imaginatively to individual needs, for example staff found effective ways for tenants to continue with a range of activities that enhanced their quality of life and fulfilment.
- For being exceptionally well-led and managed, with an ethos to continually develop and enhance tenant’s own skills and awareness.
Staff spoke highly of and were passionate about their work, comments included,“Really enthusiastic, every day is different”, and an external social care professional described the prevailing spirit within the service as one of, “positive creativity and inventiveness.”
St Luke’s Lodge delivered an exceptional level of care and demonstrated they understood how people’s learning difficulties could affect them, and showed concern for people’s well-being in a meaningful way.
