The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated services provided by Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as Requires Improvement following its latest inspection.

Inspectors visited the trust between 8 October and 14 November 2019 to assess six core services: urgent and emergency services, medical care, surgery, children’s and young people’s services, outpatients and diagnostic services. Inspectors also looked specifically at management and leadership to answer the key question: is the trust well-led?

As a result, the trust is rated as Requires Improvement overall and in four of the five key questions CQC asks - are services safe, effective, responsive and well-led?  The trust is  rated as Good in the fifth of the key questions, whether services are caring.  Following the trust’s previous inspection, in March 2018, the trust was rated as Inadequate for whether its services were well-led.

CQC has also published the trust’s Use of Resources (UoR) report, which is based on an assessment undertaken by NHS Improvement. The trust is rated as Requires Improvement for using its resources productively. The combined rating for the trust, taking into account CQC’s inspection for the quality of services and NHSI’s assessment of Use of Resources, is Requires Improvement.
