The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a report following a focused inspection of the Paul Wood Ward at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Inspectors visited the trust 23 July 2019 in response to information received which raised concerns. The concerns included responding to patient risk, nurse staffing, understanding around mental health act and consent procedures, how the ward handled complaints, leadership, culture and how the trust engaged with patients and staff.

Inspectors found staff did complete and update risk assessments for each patient and removed or minimised risks. The service had enough nursing and support staff to keep patients safe from avoidable harm and to provide the right care and treatment. Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals worked together as a team to benefit patients.

Patients were given enough food and drink to meet their needs and improve their health. The service adapted for patients’ religious, cultural and other needs. Staff treated patients with compassion and kindness and took account of their individual needs. Staff also provided emotional support to patients, families and carers to minimise their distress.

Ward staff treated concerns and complaints seriously. They investigated complaints, and lessons learned were shared with all staff. The service included patients in the investigation of their complaint.

Full details are given in the report published online at: www.cqc.org.uk/location/RT302

As this was an unannounced focused inspection the individual overall ratings of the services have not changed. The trust’s overall rating of Good is also unchanged.
