During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were 22 inpatients at the Wingfield ward, 13 of which were detained under the Mental health Act. As part of our inspection we spoke with 12 people in order to gain their views and experiences of the service. We also spoke with three members of the management team and four support staff.

Most of the people we spoke with told us they knew their rights and told us that they were satisfied with the care and treatment provided. One person said "Best hospital in the world". However, we found concerns that people had not always been involved in the decisions regarding their care or had been given access to their care plans

We saw that there were many examples of positive interactions between people and staff and noted that most people appeared to be relaxed and at ease. People spoke highly of staff and said they felt "Safe". One person told us that "Staff treat you as best they can and they are good staff".

We reviewed the care plans for four people and found concerns that these had not always been reviewed regularly. We also found that people's risk assessments had not been incorporated into their plan of care in order to provide guidance to staff to protect people from receiving care that was inappropriate or unsafe.

We found that people were supported by enough staff who were suitably qualified and skilled.

The service had completed the appropriate checks in order to maintain a safe and suitable environment for people.
