During a themed inspection looking at Learning Disability Services

Patients living at Little House told us that although a hospital unit, they referred to themselves as 'clients'. This is the terminology we have used in this report. Little House came across with a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere where staff appeared genuinely interested in what clients were doing with their lives. A relative told us, their son was well looked after at Little House and that staff were 'good' to him. One client said 'We do lots of things here, there's always something to do'. Those that were able to say were involved in their care planning.

A client told us about their role as chair of the weekly client's meeting. They said they talked about any issues clients may have. Clients told us they would talk to staff if they had any concerns. We saw examples of information produced in an easy read format using pictures, photographs and symbols. This included a complaints procedure.

An advocate said that they were entirely satisfied with the care given at Little House and by how all staff engaged with their clients. They said they were invited to attend meetings with clients and their relatives. One client told us they would be attending a meeting the following day to discuss plans for their future.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This review was carried out to check that the trust had made improvements relating to internal policies, procedures and practices that were in place at the time of our last review of the trust in March 2011.

We visited the trust's headquarters to assess the improvements and did not, on this occasion, speak with patients as part of the review so cannot report what they said.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We did not speak with patients or their relatives as part of this responsive review. However, we did speak to a member of one of the Berkshire safeguarding authorities to help inform our review.
