During a routine inspection

We visited Layland in August 2011 and met with children at that time. The children that use the service have limited or no verbal communication and we saw children receiving appropriate care that met their individual needs. Therefore, we asked parents for their views on the care and facilities provided at Layland. They told us that that they had no concerns about the quality of care that their child received.

On this visit the children were at school and we were not able to speak to or observe the children's care. However, we spoke to parents to ask them to share their views on the care and facilities provided at Layland. The parents we spoke with told us that they are satisfied with the service provided and that the children are happy to go to Layland for a stay. Some comments we received were: 'staff are wonderful', 'he is in the best place' and 'it's a valuable service'. We were also told of a young person who was in transitional arrangements, as they had reached the age for adult services, and they told us 'we'll be sad to lose the service'. Parents told us that their child's individual needs are discussed with staff, their views are listened to, and they are fully involved in the development of their child's care plan, and transitional arrangements. Parents also told us that staff contact them promptly if there are any concerns about their child during their stay. Parents could not identify any areas for improvement.

22 August 2011

During a routine inspection

Layland provides a short break service to children/ young adults with complex healthcare needs and additional learning disabilities. The children that use the service have limited or no verbal communication and therefore we were unable to gain their views on the service.

We visited Layland and observed the children with care staff and saw that the children appeared relaxed and comfortable in their presence. We saw care staff that were attentive to their needs.

We spoke with a parent who told us that she is satisfied with the service and felt that there had been recent improvements to the service, which has meant that the care to the children has also improved. We were told that her child enjoys the activities provided. This parent also told us that her child is always happy on coming to Layland and when she leaves her there.
