All Inspections

During a routine inspection

This inspection was carried out in conjunction with Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons (HMIP) who were looking at the whole of the prison regime. Prisoner focus groups and questionnaires were conducted and the overall view of healthcare from those receiving care was positive. Particular concerns included medication times not always being as scheduled and some people felt their medication was being altered without full consultation. This especially was felt with methadone prescribing.

We saw that people were assessed when entering the prison and where needed, a plan of care developed. The prison had a range of clinical services available without the need for escorted travel and records indicated that waiting times for treatment were acceptable. The premises were clean and tidy, although some refurbishment was needed to reflect published guidance, such as clinical hand wash sinks and the dental instrument reprocessing facility.

Staffing levels reflected the provider's aims and the skill mix of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals allowed for a wide selection of services. The provider had a system of quality monitoring to allow for evidence based decision making and policy review.
