During a routine inspection

We found that the clinical services provided at HMP Hatfield were considered by the patients to be good but the recent survey by Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons found that satisfaction was slightly lower than the average for open prisons. One person told us he felt the healthcare staff looked after him well when he needed to access their care and another person felt the dentist, being situated at another prison was not easy to access, as the process for being issued a travel warrant could take a long time.

We found that the provider carried out a health assessment when a person entered the prison and anybody requiring a care plan received one that reflected the assessment of their needs. There was evidence that care and treatment reflected published guidance although the provider's policy for respecting "do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation" (DNACPR) relied on cooperation from prison staff out of clinical hours.

We found that staff were appropriately supported through training, appraisal and opportunities to further career development in specialist training. The provider operated a comprehensive clinical governance programme that allowed for appropriate monitoring of quality and evidence based policy review.

This inspection was carried out at the same time as an announced inspection by Her Majesty's Inspector of Prisons.
