During a routine inspection

When detainees first arrived at the prison they were asked about their mental health needs by nursing staff and were told what services were available. Information leaflets were available about mental health conditions, what the symptoms were and how they could be treated. The detainees that we spoke with described staff as "nice" and "helpful". They were asked on a frequent basis to provide written feedback on the service and in this they described staff as "polite".

Care UK provided mental health nursing and psychology services, but there was also regular access to psychiatry services. The detainees that we spoke with were positive about the quality of the mental health services within the prison and they made comments to this effect in the written feedback they provided. Staff were trained in what to do in a medical emergency and received regular refresher training in this.

There was a policy and procedure in place for what to do if a member of staff suspected abuse which the staff that we spoke with were aware of.

All staff undertook mandatory training in a range of appropriate topics including infection control, life support and equality and diversity. They undertook the Continuing Professional Development training necessary to maintain their professional registrations.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.
