20 October 2021

During a routine inspection

Poets Mews Care Home is a care home that provides personal care and accommodation for up to 83 older adults with dementia and or mental health needs. There were 39 people living at the home at the time of the inspection.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People were currently supported by enough staff, although there had been pressure on the team following staff turnover and recruitment challenges in the region. Some relatives told us there were not enough staff to consistently meet all their family member’s needs. However, we found that the provider had taken robust action to address these concerns. A staffing recruitment and retention plan was in place. This included the use of regular agency staff to ensure people’s needs continued to be met consistently. The provider was in the process of recruiting new staff. They had implemented a plan to recruit and retain staff. The provider had also moved other staff from other homes to work at Poets Mews.

People were supported to receive medicines on time. We were assured by the infection, prevention and control measures in place. People felt safe in the home and risks they may experience were fully assessed.

Staff were seen to be kind, considerate and polite to people they supported. Relationships between staff and people were positive. People's needs were identified, and care and support delivered in ways that met their needs.

People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives. Staff helped ensure this was in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests. There were policies and systems in the home to support this.

Staff told us they felt supported by the current management team. The staff also said the past few months had been challenging due to staffing shortages. Staff were being supported and trained to be competent to provide safe and effective care.

A new manager had recently been recruited. Until they were able to fully take up their post, the area manager and two acting managers from other services were managing the home.

Quality checking systems were in place that were getting results to drive up quality and safety. The area manager and acting manager had already identified the shortfalls in the service and were following an in depth action plan.

Rating at last inspection

This was the first comprehensive inspection of the service since it was registered with us on 04 September 2019. We carried out focused inspections of the service on 14 July 2020 and 26 November 2021 where we looked at the safe and well led domains.

Why we inspected

The inspection was undertaken to provide a rating for the service.

Follow up

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service until we return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner.

26 November 2020

During an inspection looking at part of the service

About the service

Poets Mews is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to 43 people aged 65 and over at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to 80 people.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

This was a targeted inspection looking at staff levels and training. People were happy with their care and made positive comments about staff, including, “They look after us very well”. Another person said, “I’ve no complaints at all about the staff”.

The manager used a dependency tool to help them plan staffing levels in a safe way. There were sufficient staff available to meet people’s needs.

We spoke with three staff, who told us that at times it would be useful to have more staff in order to give more individual support to people who weren’t able to see family and friends due to the pandemic restrictions. However, overall they felt that staffing was sufficient to meet people’s needs and keep them safe.

Staff training covered a range of topics relevant to the needs of people in the home. Staff new to the home were satisfied with their induction and the support they received.

We checked infection control procedures whilst we were at the home and found no concerns with how this was being managed.

Rating at last inspection (and update)

This service was registered in September 2019. Due to changes in the way we are working as a result of the pandemic, we have not yet rated this service. We carried out a targeted inspection to look at safety on July 2020 and found no breaches of regulation or concerns at this time.

This targeted inspection found no breaches of regulation.

Why we inspected

We undertook this targeted inspection to follow up on specific concerns which we had received about the service. The inspection was prompted in response to concerns received about staffing levels and staff training. A decision was made for us to inspect and examine those risks.

CQC have introduced targeted inspections to check specific concerns. They do not look at an entire key question, only the part of the key question we are specifically concerned about. Targeted inspections do not change the rating from the previous inspection. This is because they do not assess all areas of a key question.

We looked at infection prevention and control measures under the Safe key question. We look at this in all care home inspections even if no concerns or risks have been identified. This is to provide assurance that the service can respond to coronavirus and other infection outbreaks effectively.

14 July 2020

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Poets mews is a residential care home providing personal and nursing care to 35 people aged 65 and over at the time of the inspection. The service can support up to 80 people.

People’s experience of using this service and what we found

People and relatives told us they were happy with the care and support they received. Comments included “They are wonderful”. Another person said, “I’ve got nothing but praise for them all”. Staff comments reflected that the home had come through some challenging times but that they now felt supported and the home was improving.

It was clear through the whole home safeguarding procedures and the provider's own investigation that there had been occasions when falls and medicines hadn't been managed in a robust way. However, it was clear from our inspection that these issues were recognised by the provider and steps were being taken to address them.

Rating at last inspection (and update)

The home has not yet received a comprehensive inspection and rating. The home was registered in September 2019 and we aim to carry out a comprehensive inspection within 12 months of registration. The inspection took place at the time of the Covid 19 pandemic and this was taken in to consideration when deciding how and when we should inspect.

Why we inspected

We undertook this targeted inspection to follow up on specific concerns which we had received about the service. The home is currently working with the local safeguarding team to identify and address whole home concerns. Two of these areas of concern are related to the number of falls in the service and number of medicines errors. A decision was made for us to inspect and examine those specific risks.
