The inspection

We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (the Act) as part of our regulatory functions. We checked whether the provider was meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Act. We looked at the overall quality of the service and provided a rating for the service under the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

As part of this inspection, we looked at the infection control and prevention measures in place. This was conducted so we can understand the preparedness of the service in preventing or managing an infection outbreak, and to identify good practice we can share with other services.

Inspection team

The inspection was carried out by one inspector.

Service and service type

Khaya Project (Wellesley Road) is a care home providing care and support for people with mental health needs. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection.

This service is required to have a registered manager. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service. This means that they and the provider are legally responsible for how the service is run and for the quality and safety of the care provided.

At the time of our inspection there was a registered manager in post. The registered manager was not available to support us with the inspection. We were supported by the senior carer.

Notice of inspection

The inspection was unannounced and took place on 22 March 2022.

What we did before the inspection

We reviewed the information we already held about the service. This included their registration report, notifications and inspection reports under the providers previous registration. A notification is information about important events, which the provider is required to tell us about by law. We used all of this information to plan our inspection.

During the inspection.

During the inspection, we spoke with a senior care staff, two people and observed interaction between staff and people. We reviewed documents and records that related to people’s care and the management of the service. We reviewed three care plans, which included risk assessments. We also looked at other documents such as medicine management, training and quality assurance records

After the inspection

We continued to seek clarification from the provider to validate evidence found. We looked at policies and staff files. We also spoke to the registered manager.

About the service

Khaya Project (Wellesley Road) is a care home registered to accommodate and support up to five people with mental health needs. At the time of the inspection, four people were living at the home.

People’s experience of using this service

Care plans contained suitable and sufficient risk assessments to effectively manage risks and help keep people safe. Pre-employment checks had been carried out to ensure staff were suitable to support people. Staff were aware on how to safeguard people from abuse. There were appropriate numbers of staff to support people when required. Medicines were being managed safely.

Staff had completed essential training to perform their roles effectively and staff felt supported in their role. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People received care from staff who were kind and compassionate. Staff treated people with dignity and respected their privacy. Staff had developed positive relationships with the people they supported. They understood people’s needs, preferences, and what was important to them. People were encouraged to be independent and to carry out tasks without support.

Care plans were person centred and included people’s support needs. Care plans had been reviewed regularly to ensure they were accurate. People participated in regular activities to support them to develop and maintain relationships to avoid social isolation.

Systems were in place for quality assurance and quality monitoring to ensure people received high quality care.

This service was registered with us on 15 August 2019 and this was the first inspection.

This was a planned inspection based on when the service registered with us.

We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service until we return to visit as per our re-inspection programme. If we receive any concerning information we may inspect sooner.
