During an inspection looking at part of the service

A routine inspection took place in March 2014 which identified that people were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed by the practice. These concerns were judged to have had a minor impact on people who used the service.

The provider was required to submit a plan detailing the action they were taking to ensure compliance with this standard and the date at which they would be compliant. The provider told us in their plan that they would be compliant with this standard by the 1 May 2014.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken appropriate measures to achieve compliance with cleanliness and infection control. This included checks, by the infection control lead, on the standard of cleaning by clinical and non-clinical staff and an effective infection control audit process in place.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people who used the service, four members of staff, two dentists and the practice manager.

We observed that care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was

intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. One person said; "Staff are very good and put me at ease'.

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies.

People who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. All the people we spoke with told us they felt safe using the service.

Infection control systems were maintained to reduce the risk and spread of infection. However, regular checks of these controls were not completed by the infection control lead.

There was enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. A member of staff told us, 'We always have enough staff. We are like one big family here'.

There was an effective complaints system available. Information about how to complain was available in the practice leaflet and on the waiting room notice board. All of the people we spoke with told us they knew how to complain. One said, 'I've never needed to but would verbally'.
