During an inspection looking at part of the service

At the previous inspection of this service in August 2013 we had concerns that people's care needs were not always met in a safe manner and that people were not able to prepare the food of their choice. At this inspection we found that improvements had been made. Risk assessments were in place which set out how to manage and reduce any risks and people had appropriate access to health care services. People we spoke with told us they were able to prepare the food they chose and we found the service had appropriate cooking facilities in place.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were happy with the care and support provided. One person said "you can talk to them any time. Any problems I have I go to them and they help me." We found that care plans were in place. However, these were not always followed and did not provide a complete overview on how to support people in a safe manner.

The service took steps to ensure people were not at risk of malnutrition. People bought and prepared their own food. However, one person did not have any cooking facilities at the service, and told us they were only able to eat cold food because of this.

People were supported to manage their own medications. The service had arrangements in place for the obtaining and recording of medications. One person told us "they give me a new lot (of medications) on Sunday. I never run out."

We found there were enough staff working at the service to meet people's needs. Records were stored securely.

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with said they were consulted about their care, and that they had control over their daily lives. One person said "I go to the shop and buy my own food" and "I have my car which gives me a lot of independence." We saw that staff interacted with people in a respectful and polite manner. We found that care plans and risk assessments were in place for people. Records showed people had access to health care professionals, and one person told us "they tell me when my appointments are."

People told us they were happy with the physical environment. One person said "I like my room, it is very good the way it is designed." We saw that people were able to access communal areas of the home. Various health and safety checks had been carried out to ensure the environment was safe, although the fire alarms had not been serviced within the past year.

We found that checks were carried out on staff before they began working at the service. These included Criminal Records Bureau checks and employment references. The service had a complaints procedure, and people told us they knew who they could complain to if they wanted to. One person said "I would talk to Roger (the manager), he sorts things out."
