During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our visit we spoke with the manager. The aim of the visit was to see if improvements had been made in relation the accuracy of the medication administration record (MAR) charts and the care plans.

We looked at the MAR charts for everyone using the service and we saw that they were up to date and staff had clearly initialled the forms when medication had been issued. The manager confirmed that staff now checked the MAR charts at the beginning of each shift and reported any concerns to the manager. Staff had received additional training and the medication policy and procedure had been reviewed. An audit was carried out at least once a week where the stock levels and MAR charts were reviewed.

We saw that the format for the care plans had been changed to enable staff to add additional information from the daily records. The staff signed and dated any new information they added to the care plan. The care plans were all up to date and an additional form had been developed for information relating to short term changes to the care and support required, for example, if antibiotics had been prescribed. The daily records were detailed and clearly written and the staff signed the notes they had added.

During a routine inspection

During our two visits we spoke with the manager, two members of staff, a relative and people who use the service.

We saw that the home was clean and tidy and people had their own belongings in their rooms. There was a lounge and dining room with patio doors leading out to an accessible garden area. One person told us "I really like sitting looking out in the garden watching the squirrels"

A person we spoke with said they were really happy with the care their relative was receiving.

We saw the staff treating people with dignity and respect. We observed over lunch that the staff were supportive, calling them by their name and ensured people had a choice.

During our visit we saw that some medication records had not been fully completed and the care plans were not up to date.

The staff we spoke with were happy with the training they had received but had concerns regarding the twelve hour shifts which they felt were very tiring.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who live at Olivia Residential Care Home, three members of staff and the registered manager during our visits. The home has been recently taken over by a charitable trust with a new manager appointed to run the service. The manager had been at the home for one week and was still getting to know people who use the service and staff and had plans to review the recording systems in place.

People who use the service said "staff speak to me respectfully", "staff respect my privacy and dignity", "staff listen" and "staff come when I call". Comments about the food included "the food is very good", "they know what I like" and "we get enough to eat". People generally said that they had enough to do during the day, saying that relatives and friends were welcome to visit.

We saw staff speak with people appropriately, calling them by their name and knocking before they entered bedrooms.
