All Inspections

20 May 2013

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we looked at the care files of four people who used the service. We also looked at four staff files and other documentation and policies and procedures. We visited two people who used the service and contacted six relatives. We also spoke to three staff members.

We found that people were able to express their views and were involved in making decisions about their care and support. People who used the service and relatives commented 'My mother was involved in the setting up of the care plan', 'We were both involved in drawing up the care plan', 'My relative is treated with respect, good humour and sensitivity' and 'Communication on any changes is excellent'. All the people confirmed that they felt safe in the care of the staff and they didn't have any concerns or complaints.

We looked at four care records and all had an assessment of their health and social needs completed. There were individual care plans and risk assessments in place, There was evidence to show that they had been evaluated and this meant that the service could show they could meet people's needs and maintain their health and well being.

Staff confirmed that they were well supported by the management and office team. They enjoyed the training and had particularly found the course on dementia awareness very good.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who used the agency and they told us that the staff were kind and that they supported them to be as independent as possible. People said "The staff are very good", "The staff are always on time and stay for the agreed time", "The service is excellent, especially when I have needed extra visits" and "I get excellent care. I think the staff are reliable and experienced."

We spoke with four members of staff and they confirmed that they liked working at Home Instead. Staff commented "The support from the office staff is very good", "I feel supported by the management team", "I love the flexibility of my job and looking after older people" and "We have regular supervision sessions and we sometimes have staff meetings which are good."

We found that although mandatory training was available some staff had not undertaken training in moving and handling and medication awareness. Also specialist training in line with the needs of people who used the agency was not undertaken. The provider was non compliant in this area.
