During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not speak with patients who used the service. This was a follow up inspection to check on compliance with supporting staff and the management of records. We found improvements to the support offered to staff working at the practice. We also found improvements with the management and security of records.

At the time of our inspection the provider did not have a registered manager in post.

5 December 2013

During a routine inspection

During our visit to Manor Dental Care we met with the practice manager, area manager and quality assurance officer. We spoke with one patient during our visit and a further three patients by phone. We also spoke with both dentists and two members of staff.

Patients told us they were given options for treatment and were involved in decisions about their care. A patient we spoke with said "the dentist said if I wanted it I could have crowns. I said what about implants. They told me they could arrange a free consultation".

Patients received treatment that was planned and communicated effectively. The four patients we spoke with told us they were given treatment plans each time they required treatment. We saw copies of signed treatment plans in patient's records.

The risk of cross infection was minimised because current guidance was followed.

Staff received appropriate professional training. However, staff told us they were not appropriately supported in their day to day work. Staff told us that they had not received any form of performance review or appraisal.

Patient views were sought and reflected upon. There were effective systems in place to manage general health and safety of patients and others.

Records were not always kept up-to-date. The dentists we spoke with told us they had sometimes repeated an x-ray because previous x-rays could not be found. Not all records were kept securely.
