All Inspections

7 June 2013

During a routine inspection

We found that the people who used the service were asked for their consent for any support provided and that their wishes were recorded and staff acted in accordance with them.

People were supported in promoting their independence and community involvement. Staff demonstrated a good knowledge and understanding of people's needs. Records showed that the people who used the service had a support plan in place detailing the support they needed

Staff we spoke with were able to demonstrate to us their awareness of storing, recording and administering medicines. We saw that staff conducted daily audits of medicines and any errors or omissions were followed up.

We found that the provider had carried out appropriate recruitment checks for people working at the home. Records showed us that references, qualifications and criminal records checks had been conducted.

We saw that the home had a complaints policy that was available to people in an accessible format. People who used the service were able to access independent advocacy support should they wish to make a complaint.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with four people who lived at the service and observed care for a further three of them. All four people told us that generally they were happy in the home. One person talked to us in detail about their arrival and stay at the home. They stated that they had visited the home with their relative and made the choice themselves to move in there. The person knew the majority of people who already lived there from a day centre they attended together. The person was exceptionally pleased with the initial arrangement for them to continue attending the same day centre, as a part of their activities.

Three people confirmed that they were involved in their care planning process. One person stated: 'I tell them (staff) what I want in my care plan and they put that in.' The other person confirmed their involvement in care planning and reviews, but added: 'I can't remember signing my care plan'. However we saw a signed 'consent to care' document.

All four people spoken with told us that they felt safe and protected. A person told us: 'No one would hurt me here. Everyone is so kind.'

Three people told us that they thought that there were enough staff on duty to meet their needs. One of them added that staff were knowledgeable and skilled to help them.

All four people stated that the staff often asked them if they were happy and if they had everything they needed.
