During a routine inspection

The location, DCA, provides care within two supported living complexes; one in Cambridge and the other in Bishop's Stortford. The complexes run independently from each other with different staff groups.

One person we spoke with said they were fully involved in discussions about their move from the supported living complex.

Staff had received appropriate training and said they were encouraged to undertake further relevant courses. Staff said they enjoyed the training as it was classroom based and not just e-learning. Staff told us they worked as a team to deal with any situations that arose.

People we spoke with told us they were happy with the staff and were encouraged to be as independent as possible. They told us they chose their meals, shopped for the food and cooked it (with staff). One person told us they were going swimming. Another went to see their physiotherapist and returned to tell staff the exercises they had to complete.

31 January 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 31 January 2013 we visited four people in their homes and spoke with them about the support they were receiving. They told us that staff were helpful and attentive and had assisted them in different ways that allowed them to be as independent as they could. One person said, "I am independent but I do need staff to remind me about certain things. I get support to manage my medication". Another person confirmed that staff enabled them to live independently, although they said, 'I understand the support that staff offer, but I manage most things myself and choose what I want to do". One other person said, "There are always staff here to support me. I like the help they give me".

We saw that care plans reflected the assessed needs that people required to enable them to be as independent as they could be. We also found that any risks that affected people's independence had been identified and were understood by support staff.

People were protected from harm through the training that staff had received and because staff would report any concerns directly to the Local Authority, should this be necessary.

There were adequate numbers of suitably trained staff to support people and to meet their needs.

An effective complaints process was in place so that people using the service were enabled to raise any concerns or complaints.
