All Inspections

2 October 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people using the service and four relatives. One person said, 'Staff are great, they help me.' Another person told us, 'I'm happy here.'

One relative said, 'This is a really good home.' Another relative said 'Staff really care.'

We found people's needs were assessed and care was planned in line with their needs. The records were person centred, this means written in a way that describes how a person would want their needs to be met and focused on them as individuals.

Relatives told us they felt included in the care arrangements and decisions.

We found that the people who were using the service were protected from abuse as the provider had procedures in place for the staff to follow if they suspected anyone was at risk of abuse.

The provider had systems to check the quality and safety of the service.

There had been no complaints about the service in the past year and procedures were in place to obtain people's views.

During a routine inspection

Some people were not able to tell us directly what they though about the service. We decided to undertake a Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI) exercise. SOFI is designed to be used when inspecting services for people who had some difficulty in communicating their opinions on the services they receive. We observed good and professional interaction between staff and the people who used the service. People who used the service were positively engaged in a meaningful ways and they appeared to respond positively to their interaction with the staff.

People who used the service had their medical and social care needs assessed and care plans were put in place to meet their needs. Contacts with healthcare professionals were kept on each person's file and the details were recorded. People told us they were well cared for at Ashlea Park Care Home and that staff supported them well with their healthcare needs. One relative who was visiting the dementia care unit told us 'The staff are excellent with the residents; they treat them with respect and dignity'
