During an inspection looking at part of the service

At the last inspection on the 3 October 2013 we were concerned about the management of medicines. During this follow up inspection we found improvements had been made in the way medicines were stored, recorded and given to people. This meant people who used the service received their medicines as prescribed.

We did not speak to people who used the service during this inspection. We spoke with the area manager and a nurse.

During a routine inspection

People's needs were assessed and care plans were produced to guide staff in how to care for them. People who used the service told us they were happy with the care their received from staff. Comments included, 'I have no complaints. I see the doctor when I need to' and 'I'm looked after very well; I like to be independent.'

People told us they liked the meals and had sufficient quantities to eat and drink. Comments included, "The food is really good here' and 'Meals are all lovely."

People told us they were satisfied with the facilities however we found areas of the home required more regular renewal and refurbishment.

People told us they received their medicines on time. However we found shortfalls with the storage and recording of some medicines.

People spoken with told us their needs were met but they confirmed that members of staff were busy and this affected nurse call response times on occasions. Comments included, 'The staff are excellent; very dedicated and kind', 'There are usually enough staff, on the odd occasions they have been short, but they manage things well', 'Sometimes we have to wait a bit, but it's not usually very long' and 'The staffing levels appear good, mum's needs are well met; they always have time to talk and listen to her'

We saw people were made aware of the complaints system. Those we spoke with said they had no complaints but would feel comfortable raising any concerns with the staff.
