During a routine inspection

People who used this service told us that they liked living at their shared lives placements. One person told us 'We go out shopping and I get what I want.' In relation to giving consent to care and treatment, a person told us 'I tell people what I want.' Another person clearly told us that they were asked for their consent before care and treatment was provided, by telling us 'We have a discussion. They ask me what I think and they we agree.'

A person told us 'I am quite happy here.' We then asked people if they felt safe. A person told us 'Yes, I feel safe' and another person said 'I am safe here' and 'I could talk to somebody if I wasn't happy.' Staff confirmed they had been trained in safeguarding vulnerable people.

The carers stated that shared lives co-ordinators made regular monthly visits to them and that regular carer's forum meetings were also held. They told us that they received regular mandatory and additional training.

We found that the service made adequate checks before employing staff to support users and carers in the shared lives scheme by speaking with the registered manager and the human resources department of the relevant local authority. We also found that the shared lives team undertook regular monitoring of the quality of the services it was providing.

During a routine inspection

At the time of the inspection Haringey Adult Placement Scheme was providing placements for approximately 55 people, with approximately 60 approved adult placement carers registered with them. We met or spoke with six adult placement carers, five people using the service, four shared lives officers, a community support worker, and the team's administrator. We also examined ten records of people using the service, and eight carer records.

People using the service were very positive about the scheme. They told us that they were provided with the care that they need, and were given choices about the support they received. They had formed strong and supportive relationships with adult placement carers, and officers. People told us 'I like it here,' 'The place is nice and clean too,' 'My boyfriend comes to see me,' 'We go on holiday,' and 'I like going out in Wood Green.'

People were supported to access healthcare professionals when needed, and were also supported to undertake varied activities in their own homes and in the community.

As recommended at the previous inspection some improvements had been made regarding the frequency of review of care plans and risk assessments, recording of care provided, and provision of further training for some carers.
