Background to this inspection

Updated 6 November 2018

The Kingsway Practice provides commissioned services under the Alternative Provider Medical Services (APMS) contract within the Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Commissioning Group (CCG) area.

The practice is now part of Hope Citadel Healthcare who provide primary care services in other practices in the Greater Manchester area. The practice benefits from high level support and leadership from the provider as well as access to human resources.

The practice website is kingswaypractice.org.uk.

The practice is responsible for providing treatment to approximately 3008 registered patients and offers services that include meningitis provision, the childhood vaccination and immunisation scheme, facilitating timely diagnosis and support for people with dementia, influenza and pneumococcal immunisations, patient participation, rotavirus and shingles immunisation, unplanned admissions, near patient testing and contraceptives.

Regulated activities include surgical procedures, family planning, treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening and maternity and midwifery.

Data shows that the age profile of the practice population has a higher number of patients under the age of 18 years and a lower number of patients over the age of 65 years in comparison to the CCG and national averages and that 63% of patients are from a white ethnic group and 32% are from an Asian ethnic group.

Information taken from Public Health England placed the area in which the practice is located as one on the deprivation scale of one to ten. (The lower the number the higher the deprivation). In general, people living in more deprived areas tend to have greater need for health services.

At the time of the inspection the practice consisted of one female, lead GP and one long term, male locum, one practice nurse, one health care assistant and one counsellor. The clinical team is supported by a practice manager and a team of administration and reception staff.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at The Kingsway Practice on 25 September 2018 as part of our inspection programme after Hope Citadel Healthcare Community Interest Company took over the running of the practice in April 2017.

At this inspection we found:

  • The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
  • The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines.
  • Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
  • There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
  • The practice, with other practices in the Clinical Commissioning Group and the wider NHS, had receptionists who were trained as care navigators who signposted patients to the right person at the right time across a variety of health services.
