During a routine inspection

On this inspection we visited Godwin and Elizabeth Wards. The minor injuries department and the outpatients department. We spoke with 12 patients about their experiences of care at the hospital. We observed the way that staff communicated with patients, and observed a mealtime service on both wards. We spoke with five staff who told us that they all worked well as a team. One staff member told us "It is lovely to work here, its a good team to work with".

All of the patients that we spoke with told us that staff treated them with dignity and respect. They all said that they were involved in the decisions made about their care and treatment and that they understood these choices because staff kept them well informed.

One patient said, "The staff here are marvellous, whatever I need I get. They look after me well, the food is great, I have absolutely nothing to complain about."

We found that patients had consented to the care that they received. We also found that care had been planned and met with their needs.

We found that the hospital was clean and that infection control was taken seriously by staff. We also found that patients comments and complaints about the service had been collected and that any complaints had been dealt with in line with the provider's policy.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with four patients. We also surveyed 12 patients in the outpatient and minor injuries unit.

We spoke with four staff and two ward matrons and other senior staff members. We also visited the two wards, looked at records and made observations throughout our visit.

People were very positive about the service and were unanimous that they were treated with respect and involved in their care. From survey results and talking with patients we found that people thought that staff were always polite and helpful. Each person told us they felt safe at the hospital and that they thought staff were well trained, caring and professional.

Medicines management procedures were in place and each person we asked told us they were able to get help and advice with their medication if they needed to. However two people told us that they had to wait for their medication at times.

People were very positive about the quality of the service and said that quality of care was consistently good. One person told us; 'Staff are always helpful and polite and over 20 years I have had excellent service.'

Each person expressed satisfaction; however some people did not know how to make a complaint if they had needed to.
