During an inspection looking at part of the service

Following our last inspection on 30th October 2012 a compliance action was made as we had concerns appropriate systems were not in place to ensure people were protected from the risk of infection. The provider wrote to us with an action plan explaining how improvements would be made. We carried out this visit to assess if these improvements had been made in accordance with the action plan.

We saw infection control audits had been undertaken utilising the Infection Prevention Society audit tool. The last was undertaken in April 2013, with a date set for the next audit. An action plan had been formulated with minor actions yet to be completed.

We did not speak with any patient on this occasion.

During a routine inspection

The practice had a small waiting area in front of the reception, which had a number of dental products, which could be purchased. Leaflets were available giving information on dental treatments, NHS price bands and oral health. Leaflets were also available in an additional waiting area on the first floor.

We spoke with 3 patients who told us: "I have no issues, I always know what treatment I am going to have and how much it will cost me", "I am always treated ok and I have no complaints about anything", "The dentist explains things and I always know what they are going to do".

Patient records were electronically maintained with x rays kept in additional hand held notes. We sampled 6 patient records. Records were effectively maintained. Each treatment episode was well documented.

We saw evidence that staff had received training in emergency procedures and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Medical emergencies simulations were carried out every 3 months.

The practice had appropriate guidance in place for staff in relation to safeguarding children and adults. Corporate polices were available and contact details of the local primary trust and local authority were kept within the surgery
