All Inspections

12 December 2013

During a routine inspection

We spent time on the ward and talked with six patients who were receiving treatment in the hospital and three visiting relatives. Patients told us that they were happy with the care they had received. They felt the hospital provided a good and prompt service. They told us that the nursing staff were kind and helpful. Their comments included 'the staff are great but often very busy', "they're good, I can't fault them". They also said 'we are told about our treatment so we know what's happening'

Patients said staff supported them to be involved in their care and make choices about how care was provided. They (patients) told us they knew they could read their plan of care, but staff kept them up to date about their care and they had confidence in the staff. They said they felt safe and able to raise any concerns with the staff. All staff we spoke with demonstrated a good understanding of how to react to concerns raised with them.

Staff told us that they had enough training to meet patient's needs. They told us that staffing levels had improved and there were now sufficient staff available on the ward.

Records of care and treatment were seen to be easy to use and mostly accurate.

Falmouth Hospital also provides additional services such as a minor injuries unit and day hospital. We did not inspect these facilities at this inspection.

During a routine inspection

We spent time on the ward, the day hospital, out patients department and Minor Injury Unit. We talked with ten patients who were receiving treatment in the hospital. Patients told us that they were happy with the care they had received. They felt the hospital provided a good and prompt service. They told us that the nursing staff were kind and helpful. Their comments included 'in the long run it is the staff that make the hospital', "they're good, I can't fault them" and 'I think the staff here are the tops'.

Patients said staff supported them to be involved in their care and make choices about how care was provided. They told us they knew they could read their plan of care, but staff kept them up to date about their care and they had confidence in the staff.

Patients told us that they had not received specific information about how to complain or if they could look at their records when they arrived at the hospital. They said they felt safe and able to raise any concerns with the staff. All staff we spoke with demonstrated a good understanding of how to react to concerns raised with them.
