During a routine inspection

During our inspection we accompanied the dentist on their visits to two residential care homes. We saw people who used The Mobile Dental Service received courteous, professional care and support that met their needs. We spoke with three people who received treatment. One person told us 'I'm happy with the dentist. They give me plenty of information and I am very satisfied with the service.'

We spoke with the dentist, who was the provider, the dental nurse and two care home managers. The dentist had provided mobile dentistry for 12 years. One care home manager said 'The dentist always checks with people and with me about changes to people's medical conditions and histories. He is very gentle and patient even with the most challenging people.'

We found that the service complied with best practice guidelines for cleanliness and hygiene. Both the dentist and the dental nurse had been trained in infection control and dealing with emergencies to protect patients from the risk of harm.

Both the dentist and the dental nurse had been trained on safeguarding procedures and showed awareness of reporting procedures. Training had also been undertaken on the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). One person told us 'I feel safe and confident with the dentist.'

The practice had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive and to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people using the service.
