All Inspections

19 December 2013

During a routine inspection

There were twenty eight people living at the home. We met and spoke with four people who used the service, one relative, seven members of staff who were on duty at the time of the visit the manager and the owner.

The registered manager was on maternity leave and there was an acting manager in place who was not on the registration certificate.

We looked at the care records for six people. We also reviewed records relevant to the management and administration of the service.

People told us they liked living in the home one person told us " All the nurses here are very good" " I like the food very much" Another person said " I like it here I know everyone " They also told us that sometimes they couldn't always do the things they wanted due to the numbers of staff on duty.

Three of the staff we spoke to told us that there were not enough staff on in the mornings, they told us that care was rushed and there was no time to interact with people as they would like to.

We observed the serving of food in the dining room people were provided with a choice of nutritious and appetising food and were well supported with their individual needs at meal times.

We observed the administration of medicines and looked closely at the way the home managed the medicines, we found the provider had systems in place to manage and administer medicines safely

During a routine inspection

People told us they could express their views and were involved in decision making about their care. They told us they were very happy and cared for very well by the staff. People considered their dignity and privacy was respected and commented 'very much so', 'absolutely'.

Staff gave people 'quality time' and people were able to discuss their individual needs and interests with them and staff respected their values and beliefs. 'They (staff) don't take over and I'm still able to do things for myself'. 'They do chat about your care and what is wanted. One thing I will say and that is staff have time for you. I'm very happy. I have everything I need'. Staff knew how to care for people at risk of falling, developing pressure ulcers or may not eat enough. People received their medicines when they needed them.

Activities were very good with mini bus trips, pet therapy, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, board games, manicure and many more. Visitors were made welcome and visiting arrangements very good. People thought their accommodation was very good . They had all the comforts they needed. They had access to all parts of the home and were not confined to any particular area.

People who use the service benefit from staff who had been subject to necessary character checks to ensure they were fit, trustworthy, and physically and mentally fit to do their job. People were confident to raise any issue of concern and be confident it would be dealt with appropriately.

26 September and 21 October 2011

During a routine inspection

We carried out an unannounced, scheduled inspection of Bodmeyrick on 26 September 2011. We were accompanied by an expert by experience during this visit. We visited again on 21 October 2011 as we had received information that a bedroom in the home was cold as the heating in that room was not working properly.

During our visits we looked around the communal parts of the home and eight bedrooms, including the one that we had been told was cold. We found that all the bedrooms were warm and the heating was working. None of the bedroom doors had locks fitted and a lock on a bathroom door was defective which meant that people's right to privacy was being compromised.

We spoke to fourteen people who lived in the home, three members of staff, the manager and the Nominated Individual for the organisation, who is the person registered with us as responsible for the conduct of the organisation. We examined the care files belonging to four people who lived in the home and the financial records of three people whose spending money was administered by staff in the home. We also looked at the medication practices and records, training records for four members of staff, and the home's quality assurance processes.

People told us that they were happy living in the home and talked to us about their personal routines, the activities they enjoyed and the meals provided in the home. People said they were involved and supported to make decisions about their care and support needs and that these were being well met by the staff team.

We observed interactions between the staff and people who lived in the home and saw that staff were friendly and respectful to the people they supported.

There were sufficient staff in the home who had the skills, and had received training, to ensure that people's health and social care needs were met.

The staff knew what procedures to follow, both internally and externally, should an incident of mistreatment, abuse or neglect be witnessed, suspected or alleged.
