All Inspections

27 August 2013

During a routine inspection

We inspected the regulated activities of treatment of disease, disorder and injury, diagnostic and screening procedures and transport services, triage and medical advice provided remotely. We were not able to speak to people who used the service however we gathered information about people's experiences by reviewing the provider's records.

We found the service had appropriate systems in place to manage medicines and controlled drugs. This included the safe storage and appropriate record keeping during all stages of handling medicines. We were told medicines management and controlled drugs procedures were due to be changed to ensure consistency across the whole organisation.

Staff told us equipment was easily available and well maintained to enable them to perform their duties.

The service had complied with ERS medical recruitment practices which were in accordance with regulations and good practice. We identified one area of non-compliance which was immediately addressed.

The service received complaints predominantly through the NHS ambulance trusts it contracted with. Complaints were investigated and recommendations made. However, we found the complaints procedure was not easily accessible to patients.

During a routine inspection

We were not able to speak to people who used the service. However, we obtained information from people who commissioned the services of Mediforce. The feedback was positive. Comments included "your paramedics clearly knew what they were doing...efficiently undertook observations, obtained consent, explained what they were doing...took an appropriate care pathway'. One of the private organisations described the service provided by Mediforce as "excellent".

The NHS commissioners told us Mediforce used their systems and processes whilst working for them. This was monitored through regular meetings and audits. Issues were highlighted to Mediforce for their action. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) NHS Trust said issues were dealt with "robustly". South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) NHS Foundation Trust said Mediforce was "generally good'.

We found the ambulance vehicles were clean and well maintained. However infection control audits to cover other aspects of the service for example, the garage environment, personal protection and waste disposal had not taken place.

Staff said they were supported by colleagues and the training that was provided.
