During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

We undertook an inspection on 5 February 2013. We found that the provider was not meeting one of the 'Essential Standards of Quality and Safety'.

During our previous inspection we found that there were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies with one exception. We were shown the emergency drug kit. Both the adrenaline for use with children and adults "epipens" had recently passed their expiry date and not been replaced at the time of our inspection. The other emergency drugs were in-date.

The provider submitted an action plan on 18 April 2013. A desk based review was conducted on 31 May 2013. The purpose of the review was to check that the necessary improvements had been made to ensure compliance with the essential standard.

The provider provided pictorial evidence which demonstrated that the adrenaline for use with children and adults "epipens" had been replaced and were now in date. This meant that there were arrangements in place for dealing with foreseeable emergencies.

We found that the appropriate action had been taken to ensure that the provider was now meeting the outstanding outcome of the 'Essential Standards of Quality and Safety'.

5 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three patients after they had received treatment on the day of our visit. All these patients were happy overall with the treatment they had received over the time they had been attending the practice. Where appropriate they had been given treatment options and the information they needed to be able to make their choice. They felt that their decisions and opinions were respected by the staff.

We found that people were given appropriate information about their treatment. Information was collected and updated about patient's medical conditions to ensure patients remained safe when being treated. Equipment was available and staff trained to deal with medical and other foreseeable emergencies except that one of the drugs for treating medical emergencies had passed its expiry date. There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. There was a commitment by all staff to remaining appropriately trained. Patient records were compiled and maintained adequately and stored securely.
