During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our review of compliance undertaken in February 2013 we found that people were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed.

The provider sent us a written plan to tell us the actions they would take to put this right. This included plans for a site survey to be undertaken with regards to having a decontamination unit installed. We spoke with our specialist dental advisor who confirmed that this complied with the appropriate guidance on 'best practice'.

We visited on 23 July 2013 and looked at a range of records including checks and audits. These showed that the provider had completed the appropriate actions and was working in line with appropriate guidance.

We did not speak with people using the service at this inspection.

28 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people using the service, three of whom had used the service for a number of years. They all told us they were satisfied with the care and treatment they received at this service. Two people described it as 'excellent'.

We looked at the treatment records of four people. They showed that people were given information on which to make decisions about their treatment. Records showed that care and treatment was planned in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare.

We saw that environment was well maintained and clean. However, we found that some facilities in relation to hand washing did not meet current guidance requirements. Audits were not available to show that checks were carried out to ensure the premises were clean or that the infection control processes were robust.

People using the service told us that staff were 'friendly and chatty' and 'sensitive to their feelings when they were struggling with nerves'.
