During an inspection looking at part of the service

We previously inspected this service on 24 April 2014 to check whether improvements had been made following our inspection of 10 December 2013. However, at our inspection of 24 April 2014, we found that improvements were still required.

At our most recent inspection of 17 July 2014, we found that Dr Marina Carew was compliant with both standards inspected. People were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed. People who used the service, staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our inspection of 10 December 2013, we found that the people who used the service were not protected against the risk of infection as appropriate guidance had not been followed. Further, people, staff and visitors to the service were not protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

We asked the provider to send us a report to tell us how they were going to achieve compliance. They told us that they would be compliant by 28 February 2014. However, at our inspection of 24 April 2014, we found continued non-compliance with both standards inspected.

During a routine inspection

We observed the dentist giving a person who used the service a selection of leaflets. They used these to illustrate the person's possible treatment options. Suitable information was provided to enable people to make a decision.

People that we spoke with were complimentary about the care and treatment that they received.

We found that people were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed.

Appropriate measures were not in place in relation to the security of the premises.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received. One person explained, "If I've had a filling [the dentist] will say, 'Close your mouth and see how that feels' and so on."
