During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 5 April 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic was visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

Ice Dental & Implant Centre is in Blyth, Nottinghamshire and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available near the practice.

The dental team includes a principal dentist and two associate dentists, six dental nurses, four dental therapists, a dedicated receptionist and a visiting clinical dental technician. The team is supported by a practice manager and an operations manager. The practice has three treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with two dentists, two dental nurses, the receptionist and both managers. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, Saturday by appointment only.

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement audits for prescribing of antibiotic medicines taking into account the guidance provided by the College of General Dentistry.
  • Improve and develop staff awareness of the requirements of gaining consent relating to the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and ensure all staff are aware of their responsibilities under the Act as it relates to their role: In particular Gillick competency and the Montgomery principle.

During a routine inspection

Prior to our visit we reviewed all the information we had received from the provider. During the visit we spoke with two patients and asked them for their views. The practice manager also provided information about recent patient survey results following responses received during 2013. We also spoke with a dental nurse, the receptionist and a dentist. We looked at some of the records held in the service including some patient dental records and staff recruitment and training records.

Patients told us, 'We have had a lot of treatment here, we feel very comfortable and reassured, and every time I have had treatment it is always done to a very high standard.' We found that the provider had ensured that staff were properly trained and supervised to deliver safe and effective care and treatment to ensure the welfare and safety of patients.

A patient told us, 'I know I am safe here, I put my trust in them and feel comfortable.' We found that the provider had suitable arrangements in place to ensure that patients were safeguarded against the risk of abuse.

A patient commented, 'Staff are very friendly, they put my children and I at ease. Staff comments included, 'We are a great team, we always give the patient really good service.'

A patient told us, 'The practice looks very clean, I have no issues with that, very clean, very welcoming.' Another patient told us, 'It seems a very clean place, very relaxing and calming.' We found that there were systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection.
