19 April 2017

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 19 April 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

We told the NHS England area team that we were inspecting the practice. They did not provide any information.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection on 5 March 2012, we found that packs of sterilised instruments were not always date stamped, which meant they may have been used after they were no longer considered sterile. We also found that the ultrasonic cleaners were not being tested regularly to ensure they were working correctly.

We carried out this inspection to check that these concerns had been addressed. We found that the service had taken appropriate steps to ensure that these aspects of infection prevention and control had been addressed.

5 March 2012

During a routine inspection

We spoke with 12 people using the services of Pasadena Dental Practice during our inspection visit on 5 March 2012. Some people we spoke with also let us observe while they were in the treatment room with the dentist they were seeing. We observed how people were treated by all three of the dentists who were working at the practice at the time of our visit.

People we spoke with told us that staff were polite and helpful. They said that

if they needed treatment the reason why was explained fully. They told us that sometimes X-rays were used to show them why they needed treatment. They said they attended for check up or treatment they were given advice about oral health and hygiene. They told us that if following a check up treatment was proposed they were given plans with details of what would be done and its cost. They said that they were given information about after care following treatment and they were asked about the medical histories.

People were all complimentary about the treatment they received and expressed confidence in the dentists they saw. One person told us their dentist was 'fine' and said 'if they weren't I would not come'. Another said that the dentist they had seen was excellent. They told us they had to have a tooth extracted and said, 'I didn't feel a thing'. They said that the dentist was 'always pleasant and on time'.

We asked people we spoke with about how long they had to wait for appointments. They told us that in an emergency, treatment was arranged very quickly. They also said that if treatment was not urgent appointments did not take long. Two people we spoke with told us they had telephoned that day because they were in discomfort and were being seen 'within hours'.
