During an inspection looking at part of the service

During the last inspection on 29 January 2014 we found the provider had not completed all the necessary checks for staff employed at the practice. The provider completed an action plan on 5 March 2014 and sent this to us informing us that they had taken immediate action to improve this. We carried out the follow up inspection to review the changes.

The practice had two dentists and four dental nurses of which three were trainees. We spoke with three members of the staff. We reviewed all the staff records to inspect the changes. As part of this follow up visit we did not to speak with people who use the service.

We saw improvements had been made and systems were in place to check that only suitable staff were employed for working in the practice. When we reviewed the records we noted that staff had not received the necessary training for child protection which is a mandatory requirement.

We also noted the practices safeguarding policy had incorrect contact information listed. The staff at the practice were not appropriately trained to respond to signs of abuse.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to four people who used the service. They were all happy with the treatment provided at the practice. One person said, 'It's a wonderful practice, very friendly and good dentistry.' Another person told us that the service was excellent and that they were very pleased with the outcome of their treatment.

People told us that they had sufficient information from the dentists to make choices about the treatment available. We talked to the three dentists and saw from the records we looked at that care had been taken to provide treatment safely.

We saw that there were effective procedures in place at the practice for ensuring good hygiene and infection control.

We looked at the staff records and saw that people were treated by qualified dentists and that some checks had been carried to verify that they were of good character. The dental nurses were not qualified and details about their experience and suitability was not available on the day of our visit.

The provider had an effective system in place for dealing with complaints about the service although none had been received.
