During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced inspection on 13 September 2017 under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a CQC inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following five questions:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it caring?

• Is it responsive to people’s needs?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found that this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services effective?

We found that this practice was providing effective care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services caring?

We found that this practice was providing caring services in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services responsive?

We found that this practice was providing responsive care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Are services well-led?

We found that this practice was providing well-led care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a follow up inspection that related to infection control, recruitment, assessing and monitor the service and records held by the provider.

We found on this follow up inspection that the provider had taken the necessary steps to address areas identified during our previous inspection in August 2013.

We observed that all areas that had appeared unhygienic or dirty had been cleaned and some items replaced.

We saw that the provider had ensured they had obtained the necessary information that related to recruitment.

We found that systems has been introduced to monitor the service and to ensure that records and information on patients were accurate and up to date.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two patients who received treatment and one parent of a patient. We observed one patient during their treatment. The patients and family member`we spoke with told us that the staff at the practice always gained consent from them before any treatment was given.

One patient told us 'I think it's brilliant' whilst another told us 'It's always good quality.'

We saw that patients were greeted in a kind and considerate manner. We looked at treatment records and saw that patients were asked to complete an overall health questionnaire. We observed that treatment was fully explained to patients and their family members.

We found that staff were trained to identify different forms of abuse against children and vulnerable adults and knew who to contact if they had any concerns. Patients and relatives told us that they felt safe at the practice.

The practice had systems in place that prevented and controlled infections however these were not always recorded. We found that most of the surgery was clean but there were some areas that were in need of improvements.

We looked at the staff recruitment records and found that these did not have appropriate checks or information that related to staffs previous employment.

The practice had some systems in place that assessed and monitored the quality of the service. However patients had not been sent surveys to establish what their opinions of the practice was.
