During an inspection looking at part of the service

This was a follow up inspection that related to infection control and staff recruitment.

We found on this follow up inspection that the provider had taken the necessary steps to address areas identified during our previous inspection in August 2013.

We saw that the provider had introduced new systems which ensured that only sterilised and date stamped equipment was stored in the dental surgeries. We also saw that the cleaner had a cleaning check-list.

We reviewed staff files and found they had all the relevant information that related to the minimum requirements in staff recruitment.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of Stanes Lodge Dental Practice we interviewed four patients and observed one treatment session. We also spoke with two members of staff and reviewed eleven patient's records.

The patients we spoke with were happy with the service they received. They told us 'They give me everything I want from a dentist.' They told us that staff ensured they had given their consent to care and treatment in advance. Patients were aware of their treatment plans and had been given options about the treatment they could have. We were told staff were 'All good.'

Patients felt confident that the dentists were suitably qualified and knowledgeable and we saw that the provider had ensured staff had access to information on safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection.

People told us that the premises were clean and that staff were seen to wear gloves and masks when they carried out procedures. However, we had some concerns about the infection control practices at the surgery.

When we looked at recruitment files, we saw that the provider had not carried out the necessary checks in relation to recruitment of staff.

People told us they would know who to make a complaint to if they had one, though none of the people we spoke with had any complaints.

During a routine inspection

Patients said that they were happy with the service provided. The appointments were flexible and they were treated with respect. They thought that they had been given enough information about their treatment options and about the fees they would have to pay.

They said that they had received the treatment they needed and to which they had consented. They were satisfied that the surgery and the equipment used had been clean and they were confident that staff knew about the importance of good hygiene.
