During a routine inspection

During our inspection we received positive feedback from seven patients. Patients felt this was a caring practice where they were treated as individuals by staff. One patient said 'I have been to a lot of dentists and none of them came close to this one. Previously I had two or three weeks of pain after a tooth extraction. Now I am not even aware the tooth has been taken out'. Another patient commented in a patient feedback form 'I was very scared of the dentist until I came to Hartcliffe. They made me feel at ease and very good'.

There was effective planned treatment to ensure patients received safe treatment that reflected current guidelines. Dentists cooperated with other providers such as hospitals and specialist dentistry centres to ensure appropriate referrals were made to meet patient need.

We spoke with all four staff working on the day of the inspection. Staff knew their responsibilities to ensure any patients who were considered at risk of abuse were responded to appropriately. Infection control guidelines were followed effectively to ensure the risks to patients were reduced.

The practice was well led by management to ensure staff knew their responsibilities to keep patients safe and practices were monitored regularly to ensure they were effective and responsive to patient needs.

During a routine inspection

While at the practice we observed the reception staff to be friendly and helpful to people attending the dentists. People that we spoke with were very complementary about the reception staff telling us 'they are amazing' and 'they are friendly and make you feel at ease. They seem to know if you are nervous before you go in to see the dentist'. These comments were reflected in the feedback surveys. All of the people we spoke with confirmed they had signed a treatment plan and that the dentists carried out detailed examinations of their teeth, gums and general dental health. Comments were positive with people feeling that the service was person centred whether someone was nervous or if they had a particular need or condition.

The reception staff told us that they were generally always able to fit people in for emergency appointments on the same day. Two people that we spoke with confirmed that they had made emergency appointments and had been seen the same day.
