All Inspections

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out a follow-up inspection to review two outcome areas which had been found to be non-compliant during our previous inspection in March 2013. We visited the practice and looked at equipment, records and spoke with staff. We also spoke with six parents of children who received treatment from the practice.

People told us they were happy with their experience of Trestone orthodontic practice. One person told us, "my child's treatment has been quite complex and the practice have been excellent and very reassuring. The results are looking very good". Another person commented that they experienced some delays in seeing the orthodontist on the day of appointment but did not find this overly troublesome as 'the quality of the work is very good'.

We looked at care and welfare provision at the practice. We were satisfied the practice were now compliant in this area. The practice had addressed the findings of the previous report.

We also considered the policies and processes in place with regards to supporting workers. Again we were satisfied the practice had successfully amended the procedures to ensure staff were provided with a satisfactory degree of support in order to carry out their work.

21 March 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with spoke with five school age children and their carers who were attending for orthodontic assessments following referral and observed three children in the surgery. All were happy overall with the consultation and the information they had been given. These patients felt that their opinions were respected by the provider. The referring dentists were given appropriate feedback.

We found that people were given appropriate information about their assessment and their treatment options. Information was collected and updated about patient's medical conditions to ensure patients remained safe when being treated.

Not all equipment was satisfactorily maintained and insufficient trained personnel were available to deal with medical emergencies.

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment.

There were not suitable arrangements in place to ensure all staff, were appropriately trained, supervised and appraised.

Patient records were compiled and maintained adequately and stored and, where appropriate, destroyed securely.

We were informed by the provider that surgical procedures is not a regulated activity at this location (although surgical procedures are included in the certificate of registration and in section 1 above).
