All Inspections

27 August 2013

During a routine inspection

We saw before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. The people we spoke with told us they made decisions about the care and support they received and staff respected their decisions.

People's care and treatment was being planned and delivered in line with their individual care plans. They told us they received the care and support they needed and they were happy with how staff delivered their care.

People were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

The premises were clean and fresh. The people we spoke with raised no concerns about the general environment but some people we spoke with said they thought the home was looking 'Tired' and 'Shabby' and would benefit from redecoration.

We saw appropriate background checks had been carried out on staff before they started to work at the home to make sure they were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

There were systems in place to gain people's views and check if staff were following company policies correctly.

We saw people were made aware of the complaints system. Those we spoke with said they had no complaints but would feel comfortable raising any concerns with the staff.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People told us they were happy with the care and support they received and felt the home was a safe place to live. We saw they were offered choice and staff respected their privacy and dignity while encouraging them to be as independent as possible. One person told us, 'I like it here, the food is lovely, it couldn't be better.' A relative commented, 'Dad loves it here; it is such a nice friendly home, that's why we picked it.'

We received mainly positive comments from people and they told us how they enjoyed the activities provided and outings to parks and for pub meals. When we asked them if there were any improvements they would like to see most people could not think of anything. However one visitor did say they thought more social activities and outings would be nice. Another said they thought the general environment would benefit from some attention.

The people we spoke with praised the staff and said they were friendly and helpful. They told us there were enough staff on duty to meet their needs and they were good at their job.

People told us they felt confident taking any concerns to the manager or any of the staff.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On this occasion we were checking records and therefore did not speak to people who were using the service. When we inspected this home in August 2011 people we spoke to had complex needs and therefore found it difficult to tell us their views about living at Eastwood House. One person told us that she had stayed in another home but preferred living at Eastwood House. Another told us that she did not like it when the home was noisy. One person told us that the food was good.

One person told us that the staff were 'very nice' and another told us that she thought the grounds were 'beautiful'.
